Text by Carl Sandburg (public domain)

Notes on the piece:

I am constantly intrigued by beauty in the profane. In this triptych, Sandburg has intimately captured one of the darker aspects of his treasured Chicago. This set of poems struck me instantly and played in my mind for years before becoming the current piece. In the end, I set the poems with a simplicity that I can only hope captures the sense of dark beauty and juxtaoposition of true and lost innonce that the texts originally conveyed to me.
